Nonsuch:START was a three year programme to sought to bridge the gap between independent artists and theatre makers and teenagers in secondary schools and Further Education across Nottingham.
Overcoming a situation in which young people's access to live theatre was generally focussed on productions of exam set-texts or seasonal pantomimes, Nonsuch:START changed the playing field and directly commissioned or programmed work from cutting-edge artists based on the lived reality of young lives - taking very much a warts and all approach.
Themes of shows presented traversed key social issues including gender, expectations of the future, race, mental health and wellbeing; with each show presented in a supportive context with key links to signpost further support.
Nonsuch:START continues in spirit in our CENTRE STAGE programme.
Over the three years of the programme we worked with Bilborough College, Nottingham Girls Academy, Ellis Guilford, Farnborough School, Bluecoat Aspley Academy & Colonel Frank Seeley.
Each school visited Nonsuch Studios or a partner venue twice per academic year for a full day each time. Starting the day by watching the performance, students then spent the rest of the day taking part in 4 workshops each. Two of the workshops were structured around the content of the shows, looking at themes, issues and the stories it contained, whilst a further two delved into elements of theatre crat and looking at how the shows were made.
All students participating also took part in Nottingham Youth Trends, with the data captured helping to shape the programming of the next year's Nonsuch:START programme.
At the heart of START was our committment to working with the best independent artists and theatre makers to present work to teenage audiences that they would relish and be inspired by.
