DYT [Do Your Thing]
2017 - 2019
The Creative Platform for Under 25s

A radical youth-led creative platform for Nottingham

In 2017 as part of the development of ChalleNGe: Nottingham's Cultural Education Partnership, Nonsuch worked alongside Nottingham City Council, The Creative Quarter and Nottingham Trent University to design and build DYT [Do Your Thing] - a creative platform for 13-25s in Nottingham.

With a mission to give young creatives the space, opportues, support and platform to do their thing, DYT was designed to challenge the accepted way in which arts and creative opportunities were distributed and accessed across the city and give rise to celebrating and showcasing the amazing talents and creative expression taking place out of sight of arts organisations.

DYT was about all 13-25-year-olds in Nottingham being able to enact their right to be creatie, unleashing their creativity, taking on their future and Doing Their Thing!

DYT was created thanks to the learnings and successes of previous projects delivered by Nonsuch. Through somewhereto_ we learnt the power of just saying YES to those who wanted to try something out and through Undivided we learnt how important it was to champion people’s opinions and provide a platform to have their say. DYT therefore aimed to build upon both of these key methodologies, providing the place, resource and opportunity for under 25s in Nottingham to do something different and then provide a platform to showcase and share positive youth-led creative talent for all to see.

What did DYT do?

DYT was a very broad programme targeted at the full range of 13-25-year-olds living, working and studying in Nottingham City which sat across 3 main areas:

Content:

  • DYT lived online as a youth-led creative magazine and publishing platform, with articles, stories and offers for 13-25s in Nottingham.
  • We created content in partnership with 13-25s, showcasing and producing digital content for a range of platforms as well as the dytlive.co.uk website.
  • A regular young producers group led the development of the online magazine whilst also gaining digital skills.

Support:

  • DYT's support offer was designed to unlock access to creativity, from providing free space, lending out digital equipment or providing opportunities for skills development, workshops or placements across the city's Arts Organisations.
  • Other organisations and businesses could also host briefs, challenges and opportunities via the DYT platform.

Partnerships:

  • Everything DYT did was always in partnership with other organisations, artists or youth sector provision.
  • We hosted a range of events, internships, festivals and collaborations with a whole range of exciting partners.

The Impact of DYT

By the end of 2018 DYT had an active membership of 147 young producers, with over 10,000 visitors to the dytlive.co.uk website. We worked to engage directly with 354, 13-25s (wider engagement of 1,094) through partnership workshops and toolkit-based campaigns with over 10 partner organisations and a number of young artists. Work produced by this partnership reached over 400,000 across the globe through the showcasing of digital work. This exploration of partnerships with DYT worked incredibly well and serves as a great proof of concept for future collaborative projects across organisations, with DYT acting as a clear conduit to young creative audiences.
